INTRODUCING T&G PIPFRUIT

T&G Pipfruit is a division of T&G Global. The company exports apples and pears from New Zealand to Asia, Europe and the United States. Having exported 750 x 40 foot reefers from its Otago coolstore in 2019, T&G expects the coolstore to process between 900 and 1,000 containers in 2020.

Each reefer weighs 26 - 32 tonne (57,000 - 70,000 lb). With no docks at the coolstore, the reefers must be positioned on the ground for loading. During peak season, the coolstore packs and dispatches 10 - 20 containers per day.

T&G'S Challenge

Before investing in two BISON C-Lifts, T&G relied on skeletal trailers and side loaders to service its Otago coolstore.

Skeletal trailers would shuttle the empty and full containers between the port and the coolstore, with side loaders meeting the skeletals at the coolstore to lift the containers on and off the ground.

With side loaders in high demand around the city, this inevitably led to downtime for T&G, as they waited for side loaders to service their site. It was also expensive, due to the premium rates charged for side loaders, compared with skeletal trailers. The other issue for T&G was the fact that only a few transport companies in the city had enough side loaders in their fleet to deliver the service T&G needed, limiting T&G's choice of service provider.

T&G'S Solution

By installing two C-Lift A32F systems on site, in two dedicated loading areas, T&G now have complete independence when it comes to grounding their 40' reefers for loading. T&G are now only relying on skeletal trailers from local transport companies to service their site. The skelies continue to shuttle containers between the port and coolstore, delivering an empty to one loading area, then collecting a full container from the other loading area for the return trip to port.

Each container transfer takes only 5 minutes. The reefers can  be loaded in about 15 minutes, and then lifted back up for collection, ensuring fast and efficient turn around times during high season. T&G are no longer dependent on just one service provider, and have the freedom to work with more local haulage companies. This, together with removing reliance on side loaders, has lowered costs and given more independence and control over T&G's container logistics.

T&G'S Results

By adopting BISON C-Lifts, T&G now have a cost effective alternative to sideloader services. By using just skellie trailers to service their coolstore, they have:

  • Cut container haulage costs by 30%

  • Eliminated costly downtime waiting for swing lifts to arrive

  • Gained move freedom and options around container haulage services

  • Secured more independence and control over their container logistics

The payback period for T&G's investment is 2.5 years, based on their 2019 export volume. With this volume set to increase in coming years, that payback period will shorten further.

T&G's staff have also embraced the change, finding the equipment easy to use, and appreciating the reduction in waiting time.  So it's a win all round!

"The BISON A32 has kept my costs down, and made my staff happy, so everyone’s on a winner!"
